Story

Castelsardo was founded in 1102 by the Genoese family Doria as “Castel Genovese” or “Castrum Januae” and renamed Castel Aragonese in 1448. The town, dominated by the Castelsardo Castle, is situated on a short, rocky promontory and has retained its typical character thanks to the well-preserved ring of walls and the small stairways. The heavily renovated Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate still has parts of its original structure from the 16th century and has important wooden altars and pictorial panels, some of which are attributed to the as yet undetermined Master of Castelsardo.
